Content Writing in 2024: A Complete Guide to Getting Started

Content Writing in 2024: Where & How to Start (A Complete Guide)

As someone who has been in the content writing field for quite some time now, the most common ice-breaker that my relatives or random acquaintances use on me is, “You know what, I’ve been trying to start content writing as a side hustle for quite some time now, where should I start?” In fact, I have answered this so many times that I could reply to you in my sleep and still speak it word for word as the last time I was asked this.

But this also makes me proud of how fast Content Writing is growing as a field. When AI gained momentum in the beginning, everybody (including myself) was shit-scared that it’s a wrap for writing, but I’m still employed, and although the workflow has changed, I’m still having just as much ( maybe even more) fun at my job.

So how can you get started as well? Let’s get into it.

Understanding Content Writing

So, what exactly is content writing? At its core, content writing involves creating valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and engage a target audience.

In 2024, content writing is indispensable as even traditional businesses are moving online today. It’s a key driver for marketing strategies, helping businesses connect with their audience on a deeper level.

There are so many types of writing. Web content writing, speech writing, article writing, product descriptions, social media content and news writing to name a few. Each one has a different formula (and you might not be the best at all of them) so try them out, create imaginary projects and evaluate where your creative juices really flow.

Let’s break down the various types of content writing you might encounter:

Blog Posts and Articles

These are your bread and butter. Blog posts are usually informal and conversational, perfect for engaging your audience. Articles, on the other hand, can be more in-depth and formal, offering valuable insights or detailed analysis.

SEO Content

This type of writing focuses on optimising content to rank higher on search engines by using the right keywords and creating content that answers the questions people are searching for. It requires little technical knowledge and usually pays higher than typical article writing.

Product Descriptions and Copywriting

Here, the goal is to persuade. Effective product descriptions highlight the benefits of a product, while copywriting is writing short pieces of effective content that can span from ad copy to landing pages, all designed to convert readers into customers.

Technical Writing and Whitepapers

These cater to niche audiences and involve a lot of research. If you’re someone who likes the technical details of a product before buying it and can simplify complex jargon very easily, this might be the field for you. You’ll mostly be working for industries like IT, engineering, and finance.

Social Media Posts and Email Newsletters

These are all about engagement and direct communication. Social media posts need to be short, catchy, and shareable and adapted to the language that your target audience speaks. Email newsletters, on the other hand, are a lot more informative and drafted with the motive of keeping your audience updated and driving traffic to your website or the latest offers.
